My Milliner Secrets Feather Manipulation
If you have been following my blog and have wondered what makes my hats and fascinators so interesting, then I can tell you in one word. Feathers! However, you do not have to wear hats to enjoy wearing feathers. You can add them to hair clips and hair bands to make glorious pieces you can wear for fun or any special occasion. I have spent a year and a lot of money buying all kinds of feathers to experiment with and now at last I have written a tutorial with step by step photos of how you can turn your ordinary hats or fascinators into masterpieces.
This fascinator has sculpted coque feathers with peacock feathers and peacock flu. Sculpting coque feathers is only one of the techniques you will learn from my tutorial.
You don’t have to make hats or fascinators to enjoy this tutorial. If you love decorating purchased hats but don’t know how. This tutorial is for you!
What is a common feather pad?
These are two examples of the feather pads you can buy in any craft store. All purchased feather pads are in this shape and feathers are glued onto a piece of cotton fabric.
It will never look like this. I made this simple one for a friend who belongs to the Red Hat Lady Society and she can take it on or off any hat at will. I incorporated a Red Hat Dress pin (broach) to give it more pizzazz. I used three kinds of feathers making this piece, which is something you will never find to buy. Curled biot feathers which I also write about and tell you how to curl in my tutorial. I also used non-stripped coque feathers and hackle feathers.
Here is a larger pad where I used black marabou feathers, curled goose feathers and dyed guinea feathers. You can make your feather pads as large as you like and when finished you can add them to a hat.
What about making a feather pad this wild? I included how to curl these eerie black coque feathers and how to curl an ostrich feather.
I made a second feather pad for the back of the other one. Yes you can layer them. The tall feathers at the sides are stripped coque feathers, another technique I include.
How about taking two white ostrich feathers and making one heart. You can either wear it or make them for your wedding table decorations. I share how I did this in this tutorial.
You can make your feathers pads as wild as you like.
