When someone asked me about designing a head scarf for someone who is going through chemotherapy treatments I first looked at what was available on the market. Then I began thinking about how to make it to fit varying head sizes, be comfortable on the scalp without hair and how to have a little fashionable fun to give someone a lift to help go through this ordeal.

I wanted this scarf to be practical, easy to wash and iron and yet have whimsy to brighten the day of a woman who is going through a radical change in her life. I made this one in cotton and also lined it in cotton, but you could line it in a warmer fleece fabric for chilly areas while still using fun cotton fabric on the outside. The zebra print and black I used is perfect so that you could add a variety of colored flowers to change out to if you are giving this as a gift.

Please note.  I have two very different hat patterns in the steampunk Victorian line.  This one is entirely different than the top hat pattern.  The crown is larger than the top hat with the hat top sloping outwards towards the top.  The brim has a gentle v-shape in front and most of the brim stays flat with only a small part turning up towards the back on both sides.

You don't have to make hats to get something out of this step by step tutorial including many photographs.  You could add feather displays on hand bands or hair clips or even on the new or vintage hats that you already have in your wardrobe.  I have written this tutorial to share with you everything I have taught myself as a milliner.  When I first began designing hats, I couldn't find anything on how to work with feathers in modern times, so I bought all kinds of feathers and began experimenting.

In this tutorial I explain how to strip, cut, sculpt, curl four of the most popular types of feathers.  Peacock, Ostrich, Coque and Biot feathers.  If you have been following my blog and have seen my wonderful creations and wonder how I do them, then I can tell you this. I make them beautiful by using feathers.
